Igezara pieces with "piecrust", "scalloped" or "notched" rim. Ige is a Saga prefecture dialect for thorn. Zara = dish. When these came out of the kiln, the pinched areas were 'sharp as thorns' before being smoothed down. Thus Igezara = Thorn plates. The form is very common in the Meiji (1868-1913) and Taisho period (1913-1926) and particularly associated with printed patterns. Igezara was made for the common man and usually thickly potted so withstand wear and tear and daily use.
